When I was at university, I was a backpacker and walked alone in Southeast Asia, India and South America. Take a leave of absence for one year and visit Australia on a working holiday visa. During these experiences, I had many encounters with people who would not be able to come across in regular daily life. In sharing experiences with new friends, it was greatly expanded the way of thinking and way of seeing. Currently, I manage several lodging facilities as the manager of Dot Hostel & Bar, and hostels nearby the Lake kawaguchiko. Mr. Taguchi says he is now studying management through experience. We interviewed Mr. Masahiro Taguchi, a young hostel manager who vitalizing the community, about the fun and difficulties of management.

Q: There is foreign staff at the hostel. What are the benefits?

A: The part-time staff of the hostel are Japanese university students and foreigners on a working holiday visa. The good points of foreign staff are not only services for foreign guests but also a good influence on Japanese staff. Recently, there seem to be many young Japanese people who only do what they have been told to do. However, foreign staff members think about what they need and move independently or make suggestions for others, so this way of working is a very good stimulus for young Japanese people.

Q:Is it important for the staff to work independently?
※See and think what customers want and give service without boss’s instructions
A:はい。
A:Yes. I am looking for a person who thinks and works independently for our guests. Not just follow the manual but do what the guest really needs or wants. And I am glad because there are lots of foreign staff who have this way of thinking.

Q: I see. On the other hand, could you tell us what you expect from the foreign staff?

A: The great strength of foreign staff is that they have a different perspective from Japanese staff. I would like them to look from different viewpoints and provide good stimulations.
But also, they need a minimum level of Japanese communication skills. However, Japanese staff also need to improve their communication skills. It’s not about a foreign language, but about how to tell it.
Between Japanese people, we understand what they want to say without explaining the background well, but it may be difficult to understand for foreigners staff who have different assumptions such as culture and way of thinking.
For example, the sense of time varies from person to person.
If I said “Could you do it?”, People don’t know until when. Some people start right now, but some are not. And I might feel uncomfortable if I would find people haven’t started. So if I want to ask him or her to do now, I should say so clearly. Of course, the foreign staff should also confirm by when.
What I am expecting for them is getting used to work with Japanese people and start understanding what we want. It is a part of Japanese culture.
