富士吉田市には創業163年の歴史を持つ老舗温泉宿「葭之池温泉」がある。ここにはヨーロッパや南米などから、大手旅行代理店やマスコミへの広告などに頼らずとも、SNSや口コミを通じ長期滞在者が集っている。実際、宿泊客の99％は海外からで、その多くはリピーターとなる。日本の古の魅力を世界に分かりやすい形で届ける。その仕掛人が古屋氏だ。自身も河口湖で民泊を経営しつつ、民泊経営のセミナーを行う。また飲食店の活性活動、富士吉田市の観光事業に助言・提言を行うなど、観光業を軸に地域を活性化させ、人や地域の価値を高め、革命を起こし続ける社会起業家だ。
これまで海外で生活し、外国人とチームを作り事業を展開してきた古屋氏に「一緒に働きたい人とは」というテーマでインタビューした。
Fujiyoshida City has a long-established hot spring inn “Ashinoike Onsen” with a history of 163 years. Long-term visitors from Europe and South America gather here through social media and word-of-mouth, without relying on advertising to major travel agencies and the media. In fact, 99% of guests are from overseas, and many of them are repeaters. Deliver the ancient charm of Japan to the world in an easy-to-understand way. The instigator is Mr. Yamato Furuya. He himself runs a private lodging and giving seminars at Kawaguchiko. He is a social entrepreneur who continues to revolutionize people and local value by revitalizing the region with the focus on the tourism industry, such as revitalizing restaurants and advising and recommending tourism activities in Fujiyoshida City.
We interviewed Mr. Furuya about the people with whom he wants to work.
Q：観光業を軸に活動をしていますが、観光業の魅力や、この地域が持つ潜在的価値についてどう考えていますか。
Q: You are keen on working in the tourism industry. What do you think about the attractiveness of tourism and the potential value of this region?
A：世界人口の11％は何らかの形で観光産業に従事しています。観光産業には、宿泊業や旅行業、航空産業、外食産業、地域の土産物などを販売する小売産業、製造業など、裾野が広いのが特徴です。富士山の北麓地区には、世界の有名観光地、パリ、バルセロナ、ロンドンなどと同様の魅力を外国人の方は感じていると僕は見据えています。
そしてこの土地に魅力を深く理解し、帰国してもまた来てくれる方は、友人知人にこの地域の魅力を伝えてくれる大切な仲間です。そしてそうした仲間は、ここに住みたい、僕と一緒に働きたいとまで言ってくれます。
A: 11% of the world population is somehow engaged in the tourism industry. The tourism industry has a wide range such as accommodation, travel, aviation, restaurant, a retail industry that sells local souvenirs, and manufacturing. In the northern foot area of Mount Fuji is the famous tourist destination in the world. I believe that foreigners have felt similar charm for this area as Paris, Barcelona, London, etc…
And if people understand the charm of this land deeply and come back to Japan, they will be an important friend who will tell their friends about the charm of this area. And those new friends tell me that they want to live here and want to work with me.
Q：普通、観光に来たお客さんが、ホステルの人に「あなたと一緒に働きたい」などとは言わないと思いますが、どうしてそういう言葉をかけてもらえるのですか？
Q: Normally, I think that visitors who come to sightseeing will NOT say that I want to work with you. What do you think why they say such words?
A：例えば、「葭之池温泉」に宿泊に来る方は、Air BnBというサイトで検索、予約し、宿泊しています。Air BnBを利用する方の多くは、自分は「お客様」だという感覚ではなく「新たな土地で、人に出逢いに来る」という感覚が強いと思います。ですから僕も来てくれる人と、深いコミュニケーションができるし、お客様とホテルマンといった関係ではなく、「仲間」になることができています。そしてこうした仲間がまた僕のところに来て、一緒に働きたいと言ってくれます。
ですからこうした仲間と一緒にアイディアを出しあって、これからの世界に対応する、新しい形の宿泊業をこの町に作りたいと思っています。そしてその新しいモデルが、他の地域にも刺激を与え、社会がより豊かで楽しいものになっていけばと思っています。
A: For example, those who come to stay at Yoshinoike Onsen are using Air BnB to make a reservation. I think many people who use Air BnB want to know Japan and communicate with Japanse.They come to a new land to see and to know people, but not come as a “customer”. Therefore, I can communicate deeply and I can be a “friend” rather than a relationship between the customer and the hotelman. And these guys come to me again and say they want to work together.
Therefore, I came up with ideas to create a new type of lodging business and start from this town to respond to the future world trend. I hope that this new model will inspire other regions and make society wealthier and more enjoyable.
Q：新しい人と人がつながり創造的な拠点となる宿泊業、面白そうですね。ではこの夢を実現するのに今、何を必要としていますか。
Q: Sounds like you are proposing a new style of living. New people connect with each other and the place will become a creative base.
So what do you need now to make this dream come true?
A： 何より「人」ですね。日本には海外の方が働くためにいろいろな障壁がありますが、その一つが「労働ビザ」ですね。労働ビザは、規模が大きい会社ほど下りやすく、僕たちのような新しくてベンチャー的なこれからの企業には用意する書類ひとつ見ても、大企業より多くの書類を提出する必要があり、難しいところがあります。
ですから、日本語資格の取得を目標として知識量を増やすことに集中する日本語学校ではなく、人と人がつながり何かを想像する力を育成する日本語学校が近くにあることは、とても僕にとってもラッキーだと思います。ぜひ留学ビザで日本語を学びに来た学生さんと仲間になり、例えば僕が無料で部屋を提供し、その代わり一緒に僕と創造的な仕事をしてもらう、こういうwork-Accommodationができたら、双方にとって素晴らしいと思っています。ただただ、決められたルーティンの仕事をするわけではありません。僕らと一緒に市の会議に参加してもらったり、セミナーを主催したり、創造的な活動を行うことはとてもいい経験だと思います。
これは社会をよりワクワク豊かにするプロジェクトで、そのために「人」がなにより大切、そんな「人」との出逢いたいと思っています。
A: Above all, “people”. There are various barriers for foreigners to work in Japan, one of which is a “labor visa”. Labor visas are easier to be issued for larger companies, and for new and venture companies like us, it is necessary to submit more documents than large companies, and there are some difficulties.So it’s very lucky for me that there is a Japanese language school nearby. The key concept of Fujiyama is fostering the ability to connect people and innovate something. This is what we need for our business partner or staff. I prefer this style rather than a school where students are crammed. Not knowledge-oriented but real communication ability to create something together. This is what I think important. I am happy to offer a work-accommodation. I can provide a room for free and students work creatively with me instead. I can be a key person for the Japanese network and students can make new friends in the field of business even while they are students. I think that great for both. The works I do with them are not routine work. I think it’s a great experience to join city conferences, host seminars, and do creative activities.
Q：なるほど。では、一緒に仲間として働きたい人とはどんな人ですか？
Q: I see. So What kind of person you want to work with?
A：「日本で何かをしたい」という目標があることが大切ですね。そして何かの能力（知識・技術など）があるともっと良いですね。そういう人と出逢いたいです。
例えば、僕たちがハンターで、焚火をしているとしますね。そこに人が来て焚火の輪に入りたい、一緒に食事をしたいと言ってきた時、やっぱり僕は輪に入る人には料理ができる人や、罠が仕掛けられる人、天気が読める人、愉快な話ができる人、など何かができる人に来てほしい。僕が仕事をあげて、相手にしてもらう、そういという関係じゃなくって、お互いにできることをシェアして、お互いに刺激しあい、高めあっている、そういう人と仲間になりたいです。つまり、仕事をもらいたいと考える依存的な人じゃなく、自分は何をしたいという意思を持つ主体的な人ですね。
A: It is important that people have something want to do in Japan and it would be better if there was some ability (knowledge / skills ). I want to meet such a person.
Let me give you an example. We ’re hunters and sitting around a fire. People come and ask to join our BBQ. What kind of people are welcome? I like people who can cook, people who can set fire, people who can read the weather, people who can talk something funny, etc. I want to be a friend with those people who share their work, stimulate each other, and improve each other, not the relationship that I give a job, and he or she just follows.
In other words, not a dependent person who wants to get a job, but a person who is willing to do what they want.
Q：目標と能力。大切だと思います。ただ若い学生さんの中には、まだ就労経験もなく、自分になにかの能力（知識・技術など）があると自信を持てない人もいると思います。そういう人に、何かアドバイスがありますか?
Q:Goals and abilities. I think it ’s important. However, some young students have no working experience yet and may not have confidence that they have some ability (knowledge, skills, etc.). Do you have some advice for such people?
A：例えば、素敵な笑顔というのも能力だと思います。自信をもって僕はこれができると言えると思います。それに能力（知識・技術など）は常に高め続けるもので、僕自身も伸ばし続けているものです。だから、主体的で目標を持っていて、自分の価値を日本で活かしたいと思い行動を続けていけば能力は常に高まっていきます。
僕はチームのリーダーとして、こうすると効果的だよとか、こうすると可能性が広がるよといった助言はしますが、こうしなさい！といった指示や強制はまずしません。するとみんな僕のチームは、自ら考え働き始めます。僕は人が「ありのまま」でいて、その人のできることを行い、自分の価値を提供していけば、今まで生まれてない何か新しいものが創造できると信じています。
A: For example, I think that a wonderful smile is an ability. I can say that I can do this with confidence. In addition, I myself, my abilities (knowledge, skills, etc.) are constantly improving, which means all of us are still on the way to be a master! So, if you continue to improve yourself with focus on your own goals, your ability will always increase.
As a team leader, I would advise them that this would be effective, and this would expand their possibilities, but I would not say “Do like this!” I will not force people into instructions or compulsion. Then everyone will start thinking their self and working on their own. I believe that if a person keeps on doing “as they are,” and providing one’s own value, (s)he can create something new that has never been born.
